A big part of what I do for Talking Saves Lives is the audio stories about addiction. As an advocate it is easy for me to share other people's stories. To thank them for their bravery and applaud there unapologetic honesty. However, as a person recovering from addiction, it was hard for me to think about sharing my own story.
I cannot explain the things my eating disorder and substance abuse with science. I cannot say "sorry my brain is just programmed this way," without it becoming a debate. The stigma is different when it comes to things people perceive as a choice. Then of course I get nervous about what people will think of me.
My new years resolution is to end the stigma, and I think I'll start today.
