The shot helps decrease the illegal sale of suboxone. Many patients only use harm reduction treatment, like suboxone maintenance, when they are unable to obtain their drug, which Baylor says, “adds to the stigma of hard reduction medications being ineffective.” She says that the stigma and lack of education about hard reduction keep the conversation surrounding these forms of treatment negative, when many people can benefit from medication.
Depending on a person’s daily dose strength determines if the shot will be monthly or weekly. Baylor said the patients described the medications affect as feeling “more normal,” and liked not taking a pill everyday.
Baylor believes that this will be another viable avenue of treatment for those who are motivated towards recovery.
