Mental health. We all have it, literally, I don’t care who you are or how perfect you portray your life to be, we all have mental health. Still, for some reason, there is a stigma surrounding it?
I’m not going to get into mental illness and how 1 in 5 Americans have one and how less then half of those people get the help they deserve, because that’s even more stigmatized, I’m just going to talk about mental health.
Mental health is the pressure you feel to look a certain way because summer is here. Mental health is the feeling in your stomach when you studied all night for a test, have work at 7 am, and a social life you want to keep up with. Mental health is the dark sadness you felt when your significant other left you. Mental health is your self doubt. Mental health is also the feeling you get when you ace the test. Mental health is also the feeling when you the butterflies in your stomach won’t settle down because someone is treating you how you deserve to be treated.
Mental health is good and bad. Mental health, like physical health, can be worked on. We go to the gym and eat healthy, treat ourselves to that ice cream once in awhile, why don’t we treat ourselves to a therapist? Why don’t we treat ourselves to asking for help? Why don’t we have a support system in place the same way we have a personal trainer or primary care doctor?
Maybe we are embarrassed. Maybe we feel like it’ll get better on its own, and maybe it will. But why are we willing to risk it?
We all have mental health, we all have good times and bad times, it’s time to start talking about it and stop ignoring it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s taking care of yourself, there is only one of you and you only have one life, why let it be anything besides extraordinary?
